Today's games

April 15, 2000|By Gary Lambrecht

No. 7 Maryland (7-2) at No. 8 Johns Hopkins (4-3)

Site: Homewood Field

TV: Ch. 2

Radio: WJFK (1300 AM), WMUC (88.1 FM)

Skinny: Hopkins has won three straight but now faces a superb defense with a hot goalie. Maryland could solidify a national tournament bid, but must contain an offense that has found new life from players like freshmen attackman Adam Doneger and Bobby Benson and the always dangerous Dan Denihan and A. J. Haugen. It figures to be a close, low-scoring affair that could be decided by the faceoff men, and the Blue Jays have the edge there with Eric Wedin.

No. 15 UMBC (4-5) at

No. 12 North Carolina (6-4)

Site: Fetzer Field

Time: 3 p.m.

Skinny: The Tar Heels are trying to break a four-game losing streak and re-establish themselves as a national tournament player against the pesky Retrievers, who have improved steadily since a 1-2 start. Carolina is led by attackman Chase Martin. He leads the team in points (31) and is second in ground balls (48).

UMass (4-4) at No. 4 Loyola (7-1)

Site: Curley Field

Time: 1 p.m.

Radio: WNST (1570 AM)

Skinny: The Greyhounds have not lost in seven previous meetings with the Minutemen, and Loyola is basically unbeatable at home. The Greyhounds should start a new run after having their 30-game regular-season winning streak ended last week by Syracuse.

Siena (0-7) at

Mount St. Mary's (6-5)

Site: Mountaineer Lacrosse Field

Time: 2: 30 p.m.

Skinny: Siena has been outscored by an average of 10.3 goals, and should provide more Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference fodder for the Mountaineers, who are enjoying their longest winning streak (six) in 14 years.
