Hot corner

April 14, 2000

Quote: "I was upset that I ran out of gas. It was one of those kinda days where you know you're done." -- Greg Maddux, who worked seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs agains the Cubs.

It's a fact: Sammy Sosa has nearly twice as many strikeouts (15) as hits (eight). He whiffed twice more yesterday before legging out an eighth-inning double.

Who's hot: The Cubs' Ricky Gutierrez has an eight-game hitting streak.

Who's not: Mets shortstop Rey Ordonez, who walked three times last night, is 1-for-24 this season. The Gold Glove winner also has made three errors. He made only four last year.

On deck: The last NL team to play its home opener, the Dodgers, will face Ken Griffey and the Reds at renovated Dodger Stadium. Orel Hershiser, 41, will start for Los Angeles.
