Correction

April 14, 2000

An article in the Howard County edition of The Sun yesterday on a revision to County Executive James N. Robey's policy of destroying old Police Department guns -- he approved an option allowing officers to buy back their old guns -- contained a number of errors.

The article incorrectly stated the amount of money police would have saved on gun purchases if they had been traded in to the manufacturer instead of being destroyed. The correct amount is $100,000.

Also, the article incorrectly stated the policy on trigger locks for guns bought by the officers. They will not be required.

It also failed to make clear that officers will be required to sign a legal agreement prohibiting them from selling or giving away the weapons.

Finally, the headline implied a broader policy change with the modification, which had been under consideration for several months.

The Sun regrets the errors.
