With second-place finishes in races on either side of a thunderstorm delay in the late afternoon yesterday, Mervo pulled out a five-point victory in a hotly contested Gilman Relays.

The Mustangs took the event from Calvert Hall, 72-67, with Woodlawn (59), Gilman (57) and Mount St. Joseph (56) also in the running for the first-place trophy until the final events.

In the girls' competition, McDonogh broke away late, its 79 points prevailing over Mervo (46), Woodlawn (40) and Meade (34).

Top individual performances in the team-oriented event were turned in by Norman Forrest and Kelley Jackson of Mervo, who jumped 22 feet and put the shot 46-3, respectively, and Neil Duhaney of Woodlawn, who triple-jumped 43-9.

Woodlawn captured four relays, including the 3,200 with an excellent time of 8 minutes, 14.5 seconds.
