The season for shopping

MARYLAND SCENE

April 09, 2000|By Sloane Brown

You know spring has come when you wander through lush gardens inside the exhibition hall of the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. Almost 700 people did just that, as they celebrated the season at Union Memorial Hospital's "Rites of Spring Annual Garden Show" preview party. The get-together was a perfect outing for dedicated shoppers and their spouses. One partner could enjoy the food, drink and company, while the other explored a range of home, garden and jewelry boutiques inside the hall.

Among those enjoying the scene: event co-chairs Martha S. Cahill and Xandy Hoff Waesche; honorary co-chairs Dr. Shaw and Betsy Wilgis; Paula Segalman, past event chair; Harrison J. Rider III, president of Union Memorial Hospital; Greg Szoka, Union Memorial board chair; Pat Smyth, MedStar Health board chair; Rick Phelps, president of Carroll Independent Fuel Co.; Nancy Lowry, owner of Designs for Greener Gardens; Bill McGee, associate with Alexander Baer Associates Inc.; Jackie Skudrna, owner of Myland Farms; Nan Rosenthal, Harbor Hospital Foundation director; and Ed Brody, president of Brody Transportation.

The garden party also produced another kind of green -- $118,000 for Union Memorial Hospital's new Critical Care floor.
