'Pursuing Beauty'

April 06, 2000|By Glenn McNatt

Photo Works, Baltimore's newest community photography center, exhibits Monika Andersson's pictures of high-school prom dancers, beauty contestants, drag queens and others engaged in the eternal human quest to win friends and influence people by looking one's best.

Andersson's subjects are optimistic rather than vain, and their craving for acceptance gives them a wistful vulnerability that make the photos both touching and true. The works, collectively called "Pursuing Beauty," continue on display through April 16.

Photo Works is located at 3531 Chestnut Ave. in Hampden. Open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 410-889-4600.
