"Hold fast to your dreams as you would your balloons!" read signed copies of Jerdine Nolen's book "Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm," which Disney will release on television this spring. Sage advice for anyone, but especially a writer waiting for her work to be published. "Things don't always happen overnight," Nolen, a local author, writes on her Web site. "You do the work, and then you wait, sort of like waiting for ... seeds to sprout."

Nolen, a Reading by 9 contributor and author of "In My Momma's Kitchen," presents her newest work, "Big Jabe," at the Bibelot bookstore at the Festival at Woodholme Sunday at 2 p.m. She will read from and sign copies of the book, a tall tale about a hero with a kind heart and the strength of 50 men who brings freedom to the slaves of Plenty Plantation. To learn more about Nolen and her writing, or find activities to accompany her works, go to www.jerdinenolen.com. Bibelot, 1819 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, 410-653-6933.
