County police will be checking for drunken drivers in the Laurel area this weekend.

A DWI checkpoint will be set up on Route 198 at Brockbridge Road between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday -- a site selected because of the frequency of alcohol-related accidents in the area, authorities said.

In 1998, according to police records, 72 accidents occurred within two miles of the checkpoint site. Nearly 8 percent of traffic accidents in Anne Arundel are related to drugs and alcohol, state highway administration records show.

The checkpoint will be the 17th such operation by the county police. During the previous 16, police reported a total of 172 arrests for drunken driving and 35 for drug possession.
