Weekend at Pimlico

April 01, 2000|By Bob Pickering

A three-horse contingent from New York appears the strength of the John B. Campbell Handicap, set for its 46th running at Pimlico this weekend. Seven older males are entered.

Tarquinius, Stronach Stable's color bearer trained by Joe Orseno, appears strongest of the New York trio. Prior to winning back-to-back allowance events, Tarquinius lost the Grade 3 Stymie Handicap by a neck.

End of the Road ships in with two recent victories in allowance affairs at Aqueduct. Salty Note has already made his mark locally, winning the St. Brendan Stakes last month.

E & G Stables' Cailoto, a former mid-priced claimer who now owns a five-race winning streak, is the likely favorite for the eighth running of the Gala Lil Stakes. The $50,000 event, for Maryland-bred fillies and mares who have never won a sweepstake, will be run at 1 1/16-miles.
