Saddle Pals plan spring horse show in Mount Airy

MOUNT AIRY Saddle Pals will hold their Spring Show beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Mount Airy Carnival Grounds, at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road.

Divisions are Novice, Green Horse, Short Stirrup, Western, Junior English and Senior English.

Twenty-eight trails will be featured, including halter-open, leadline, pony or horse walk, novice walk/trot/canter, short stirrup walk/trot, short stirrup over 18-inch fences, western pleasure/horsemanship, green horse walk/trot/pleasure, Junior and Senior English pleasure and equitation, Junior and Senior under saddle, hunter under saddle and hack 2 inch, over fences, and open trail.

A current Coggins Test (within one year) is required and a copy of the Coggins must accompany the entry to validate it. Sandra Weinreich will judge the events.

Registration begins at 8: 30 a.m. and the entry fee is $5 per class or $4 for pre-entry. During lunch there will be a cakewalk and bareback dollar classes. In addition, there will be a 50/50 class for $5, with half paid back.

SCHS fashion show

The South Carroll High School PTSO will hold a fashion show at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the school auditorium. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

According to PTSO President Diann Linton, about 24 girls and five boys will model clothes from Belk's, Benns Men's Wear and Formal Wear, Britches, London Fog and Target. The event will be held in conjunction with the school's cosmetology department, which will be doing the hairstyles for the girls.

The fashion show, organized by chairwoman Carol Murray, will feature South Carroll students Heather Weisse and Noah Mazaika as commentators.

Free desserts will be served, and entertainment will be provided by the Carnes Brothers band, singer Meredith Heinen and magician Josh Norris.

Jaycees golf tournament

Mount Airy Jaycees will hold their annual golf tournament April 14 at West Winds Golf Course, 11330 Country Club Road in New Market. This scenic 18-hole championship course features rolling terrain, winding creeks, and bent grass fairways. Tee time is 1 p.m.

Registration fee includes greens fees, cart, food and awards. Deadline to register is today. If you are interested in becoming a hole sponsor or playing in the event, call 301-865-5168 for more information or registration forms.

Junior Legion team

Gold Star Post 191 of Mount Airy is sponsoring a Junior Legion team that will participate in the Metro League, 16 and under division. Tryouts will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday and April 8 and 9 at the Legion field on Prospect Road in Mount Airy.

Tryouts for the Mount Airy American Legion team will be held from 3: 30 p.m. to 5: 30 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday and April 8 and 9 at the Legion field.

The American Legion team participates in the Western Maryland District. Players who are 15 to 18 years old on or before tomorrow are eligible to try out.

Players in South Carroll, Glenelg, Linganore or Urbana schools or who live in these school districts are encouraged to attend tryouts.
