Museum Discovery Weekend

Adventure awaits visitors to 15 historic sites and museums during Frederick County's annual Museum Discovery Weekend, this Saturday and Sunday. Meet characters from the past, walk down memory lane with longtime Frederick County residents, and take part in hands-on activities.

Participating sites include the Barbara Fritchie Museum, the Beatty Cramer Architectural Museum, the Brunswick Railroad Museum, the Children's Museum of Rose Hill Manor, the Heritage Farm Preservation Society, Monocacy National Battlefield (pictured), the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum, the Historical Society of Frederick County and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.

A brochure with detailed program descriptions and a map is available at the Frederick Visitor Center, 19 E. Church St. Passports, good for both days, are issued for admission at participating sites. Admission is $5, free ages 12 and under. Call 301-663-8687.

Pennsylvania Maple Festival

It's "sugarin' time" in Pennsylvania's Somerset County, and the community of Meyersdale will celebrate the occasion for two weekends with the 53rd annual Pennsylvania Maple Festival. Enjoy arts and crafts;listen to country fiddlers, bluegrass singers and other entertainers; visit a country store, an old-time doctor's office and an antique cobbler shop. There also will be an operational sugar camp, maple demonstrations, a children's corner with storytelling, and plenty of food. A Civil War encampment is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, a classic-car show Sunday, an antique-car show April 8, and a parade April 8.

The festival hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, and April 7-9 in Festival Park and throughout Meyersdale, Route 219. Admission is $4, $1 ages 6-12 and free ages 5 and younger. For a schedule of festival events, call 814-634-0213.
