Green Terror unbeaten after 19-13 triumph

Dave Riley scored a career-high five goals and fellow junior Brett Sweeney added three goals and a career-high seven assists yesterday for unbeaten Western Maryland. The Green Terror broke open a tie game in the second half and defeated visiting Messiah, 19-13, in the first game of the inaugural Green Terror March Mayhem men's lacrosse tournament.

In the other opening-round game, junior Greg Bardzik scored unassisted with 3: 39 remaining to give Villa Julie a 9-8 win over Babson and set up a title-game matchup with Western Maryland today at 2 p.m.

Western Maryland (5-0), ranked 20th in Division III, scored five straight goals in the first eight minutes of the second half for an 11-6 lead over Messiah (1-4). Sophomore Mike Griffin scored twice during the run, as the Green Terror equaled its win total for 1999, when it finished 5-9.

Freshman Joe Ellis had four goals and two assists for Western Maryland, which had squandered a 5-1 lead. Junior Connor Pett led Messiah with five goals.

Meanwhile junior Rob Ruff scored four goals for Villa Julie (4-4), three in the second half, and the Mustang defense held on in the closing minutes to beat Babson (0-2). Villa Julie never trailed but never led by more than two goals, thanks in part to a hat trick by Babson junior Chris Darmon.

Babson takes on Messiah in the consolation game today at 11 a.m.


Mount St. Mary's 19, Ohio 7: Host Mount St. Mary's (2-2) scored 12 second-half goals to pull away from a 7-4 halftime lead. Ashley Rusk and Beth Fischer had hat tricks to lead 10 Mount scorers.

The Mountaineers held a 3-0 lead through 10 minutes as Fischer scored two and Sarah Schaffner one. Christa Meyer scored with 16: 56 left in the period for the Bobcats (2-4), but with 5: 55 left in the half, Michelle Coates' goal raised the Mount lead to 5-1.

The Bobcats scored three straight, two by Katie Dempsey, before Lara Steinbraker's goal gave the Mount the 7-4 halftime edge.
