Tax questions

March 25, 2000

Members of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants are answering readers' tax questions through April 15.

In filling an electronic tax return, how do you handle your W-2 since you're not mailing in a return?

Since the taxpayer's signature does not appear on the electronic return, Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Declaration for Electronic Filing or, if applicable, Form 8453-OL, U.S. Individual Income Tax Declaration for Online Filing, must be filed with the Internal Revenue Service. Copy B of Forms W-2, W-2G and 1099-R should be attached to the appropriate form. Note that each of these forms has a different filing deadline. A signed Form 8453 must be mailed to the IRS service center where the return was transmitted within three business days after the taxpayer receives acknowledgment from the IRS that the return was accepted. A paid preparer must also sign the form. A signed form 8453-OL must be mailed to the IRS on the next working day after you have received acknowledgment that the IRS has accepted your electronically filed return.
