Swept up in fishnets

Regular stockings are boring. Bare legs are a little chilly. It's a good thing fishnet stockings are back.

Fishnets can be worn alone or layered over solid color tights. Shown as part of Prada 's and Gucci's spring collections, the stockings look sexy and contemporary.

For Prada fishnets, expect to pay $84.

For something a little more reasonable, consider Wolford fishnets, below, which cost $40 a pair. These resilient hose, made by the famed Austrian legwear manufacturer and favored by such celebs as Gwyneth Paltrow, Whitney Houston and Madonna, contain Lycra. They are available in Wolford boutiques, such as the one at Tyson's Galleria II in McLean, Va., or at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

Goodbye, grungy jacket

Jean jackets used to be so grungy.

Faded, tattered, ripped and, yes, even acid-washed was hip for jean jackets in the '70s and '80s -- all the better to show off your ACDC buttons and rhinestone pins and make your parents seethe over what a slob you'd become.

The jean jacket is back, but it's not the same.

It's sleeker, more fitted, crisp. Sure, jean jackets are still distressed, but they somehow end up looking soft and modern, not sloppy. And they're not just made of basic blue denim, either. For women, look for jean jackets that are cropped and distressed (Gap, $48, left) and in such colors as red and yellow or in icy pastel shades of suede. For men, in addition to the classic denim jacket, consider rusty brown suede (Gap, $178), or red leather.

Your parents would be so proud.

It's about time, it's about space

Name the only timepiece made in Towson that was recently launched into space on the wrist of a NASA scientist.

The answer is the Mission Series Watch -- created by Hartwig Balke and George Thomas, founders of the Towson Watch Co. -- which went up on the Shuttle Endeavour last month. The watch, a chronograph with a 25-jewel, high-grade, self-winding movement, is engraved with the names of each of the shuttle Endeavour's crew. It was worn by German scientist Gerhard P.J. Thiele.

Want it? Too bad. This particular watch is spoken for by Thiele. But the Towson Watch Company did make 100 Mission Series watches. Towson Watch Co. watches cost $2,000-$4,000 and are available at Fernier Jewelry Design Co. in the Shops at Kenilworth in Towson.
