Cal Bar returns to the lineup

March 16, 2000|By Jon Morgan

The Cal Bar is back.

After a parting of the ways between Orioles All-Star Cal Ripken and a maker of celebrity candy, the two have reunited to produce a new confection.

Morley Candy Makers of Clinton Township, Mich., will sell the 2-ounce rice-and-chocolate bar to schools and other groups. They, in turn, will resell them at higher prices to raise money for their programs. The bars carry the phone number and Internet address of Ripken's chain of for-profit baseball camps, which will also get a portion of the proceeds.

The original Cal Bar, made of chocolate, peanuts and caramel, debuted in 1993 and was a top seller. Morley and the player, however, couldn't agree on how to divide the proceeds.
