Parents agree daughter's shooting was an accident

March 14, 2000|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Mark and Sandra Mohlmann, parents of an 18-year-old daughter who was fatally shot at their home near Finksburg on Feb. 28, said yesterday they agreed with a conclusion by state police and the Carroll County state's attorney that their daughter was the victim of an accident.

The Mohlmanns issued a statement after State's Attorney Jerry F. Barnes said no charges would be filed in the shooting death of Sarah V. Mohlmann.

Barnes said the victim had taken a loaded revolver from a locked drawer in her parents' bedroom. She told two friends, Daniel J. Sullivan, 20, and Sara E. Webb, 19, that the gun was unloaded.

Barnes said Webb was holding the weapon flat in the palm of her hand when she touched the trigger, discharging a .22-caliber slug that struck the victim's head.

"Absent reckless behavior or negligence, there is no evidence of criminal intent or conduct," he said.
