A Cape St. Claire resident will return from vacation this week to find her house nearly destroyed by a fire and her dog and two of her cats dead.

The morning blaze yesterday caused more than $100,000 in damage to the three-story Cape Cod-style house on Ramblewood Road, said John M. Scholz, Anne Arundel County fire department battalion chief.

Investigators have determined that the fire started on the second floor, but they haven't determined the cause. "It does not appear to be suspicious," Scholz said.

It took nearly 40 firefighters about an hour to control the blaze, he said. One firefighter, Renee Grapes, 26, was treated for exhaustion at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

No one else was injured, Scholz said.

Firefighters were able to rescue a cat named Tom.

A neighbor reported the fire shortly before 8 a.m.
