Math and science fair scheduled for students Friday and Saturday

The Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science is sponsoring the 20th Science-Mathematics-Engineering Fair for area students in grades six through 12 Friday and Saturday at Hill Field House at Morgan State University.

On Saturday, students' projects will be displayed for public viewing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and an awards banquet will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in McKeldin Center Ballroom at Morgan.

Entrants will win trophies and monetary and scholastic awards. The top two winners from the senior division will receive all-expenses-paid trips to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Detroit from May 7 to 13. Information: 443-885-3134.

Rec department to sponsor public-speaking competition

The Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring "Speak Up! Speak Out!," a public-speaking contest for students ages 5 to 18 at 6: 30 p.m. March 31 at Mount Royal Elementary-Middle School, 121 McMechen St.

Contestants will participate in a series of elimination rounds. Winners will receive trophies.

Prize-winning poet-essayist to give reading at Goucher

TOWSON -- Poet and essayist Maxine Kumin will give a reading at 7: 30 p.m. March 29 in the Van Meter Hall faculty lounge at Goucher College.

Co-sponsored by Goucher's English Department and the Women's Studies Program, the Pulitzer Prize winner's visit is part of the 16th annual Women Writing About Women Writing competition. Kumin will serve as writer-in-residence for the four winners of the competition.

Carney improvement group to hold meeting Thursday

CARNEY -- Carney Improvement Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carney Elementary School, 3131 E. Joppa Road.

Residents and members of the business community, homeowners associations and civic groups are urged to attend.
