Baltimore police arrest suspect in one killing

Three people were fatally shot in Baltimore yesterday, including a man who was killed last night in West Baltimore.

Police said the latest victim was shot in the back by an unknown assailant about 7: 30 p.m. on the parking lot of an apartment building in the 2500 block of Winchester St.

Detective Homer Pennington said the victim, who had a Montgomery County public school system identification card, died at 9: 30 p.m. at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

About 6 a.m., a man dressed in black shot a woman, 48, in the back in the 2400 block of E. Biddle St. and fled, police said. The victim's identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Police said they knew of no motive and had no suspect.

About 2 a.m., a man was shot in the chest during an argument with another man at a birthday party for the victim's mother at Danny Boy's Lounge in the 1700 block of W. Pratt St., police said.

Eddie Smith, 22, of the 200 block of N. Calhoun St. died at 2: 44 a.m. at Shock Trauma, police said.

The gunman fled but was followed by a man at the party several blocks north to the 1500 block of N. Mount St., where the witness flagged down an officer, who arrested the gunman.

Edward Nadel Mason, 56, was charged with first-degree murder and a weapons violation, police said.

Mason, of the 3500 block of Essex Road, Woodmoor, Baltimore County, was being held without bail at Central Booking and Intake Center. A bail hearing was pending today.
