The matches at the Haswell M. Franklin Senior Classic didn't count, but Brandon Lauer completed his undefeated high school career with another exclamation point.

The two-time 125-pound state champion from River Hill defeated Mount St. Joseph private schools state champ Steve Lanciotti, 4-2 in overtime, and helped the Class 4A/3A representatives sweep the private schools and Class 2A/1A wrestlers at River Hill High in Columbia last night.

While other area wrestlers -- including Chesapeake's state titlist Jeff Eveleth and Gilman's two-time National Preps champ Mike Faust -- joined Lauer as gold-medal champions at their respective weight classes, all eyes were on Lauer's bout with Lanciotti.

Lanciotti opened the scoring with a takedown in the first period, but Lauer tied the score in the second period when he somersaulted forward and landed on top of Lanciotti.

After a scoreless third period, Lauer scored a takedown in the overtime period to win the match.

Lauer, who accused Lanciotti of "talking a lot" before their bout, said he looked forward to wrestling the Mount St. Joseph standout.

"In the beginning, I wanted to stay aggressive because I knew he was going to run," Lauer said. "He got a lucky two on me."

Lanciotti, who took out his frustration by pinning Doug Smith of Joppatowne in 4: 20, said he blamed himself for the loss.

"It's not disappointment to lose to Brandon Lauer," Lanciotti said.

Eveleth swept the 119-pound division with a 16-1 technical fall of Mount St. Joseph's Alex Kocay and a 9-3 decision over Linganore's Dave Pucino.

Faust won the heavyweight crown with a 20-5 technical fall against Mount Hebron's Karol Gryczynski and a 25-14 major decision of Northeast's Rodney Jones.

Henry Friskey of Boys' Latin provided the evening's biggest surprise at 140 when he pinned Williamsport's Josh Swartz and Chopticon's Garrett Black -- both of whom were state runners-up in the Class 2A/1A and 4A/3A tournaments, respectively.
