BURLINGTON, Vt. -- What began wonderfully ended horribly for Towson yesterday at Patrick Gymnasium.

The Tigers squandered a 17-point halftime lead and were routed by Boston University, 84-69, in the opening round of the America East women's basketball tournament.

The seventh-seeded Tigers rolled to a 49-32 lead at the half behind the inside-outside offense of Shniece Perry and Mylisa Pilione. But No. 10-seeded BU turned defeat into victory by shooting 70 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes and outscoring Towson, 52-20.

"In the first half, we attacked the basket, we pressured the ball, and we ran in transition," Tigers coach Ellen Fitzkee said. "But in the second half, BU did everything we did in the first. They just took it to us, and we couldn't stop them."

Perry, who was voted to the second team all-conference squad earlier in the day, scored 18 points in the first half on 8-for-10 shooting. Pilione added 15 points by hitting four of six three-pointers as Towson shot 54 percent from the field and forced 15 BU turnovers.

But the Terriers (8-20) took their play to a higher level in the final period. In the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, they shot 11-for-13, while the Tigers (9-19) went 0-for-5 and committed seven turnovers.

"They really picked it up, and we seemed to lose it for a while," Perry said. "We got a little bit complacent with our lead."

Pilar Verde, who scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half, gave BU its first lead, 54-52, with 11: 30 remaining. Perry got into foul trouble and the Terriers stretched their lead to 63-58 before Towson regrouped.

Shonte Simpson put the Tigers in front, 69-68, with a pair of free throws at 4: 29. But Towson did not score again as the Terriers closed with a 16-0 run to win going away.
