RICHMOND, Va. -- Maryland-Eastern Shore women's basketball coach Trina Patterson got exactly what she wanted out of her team in yesterday's 60-55 win over Delaware State in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

She had made a two-part request -- win, and have at least three players grab five or more rebounds.

She ended up having five players with at least five as the Hawks (9-18) outrebounded the Hornets, 50-31.

"I'm proud of our team," said Patterson, whose team moves on to play Morgan State tonight at 7. "We had been struggling a little bit with rebounds, but this game we had balanced rebounding."

The Hawks also held the Hornets (11-17) to 25 percent shooting in the first half, and went on a 26-3 run to open up a 31-18 lead at halftime. The Hornets went over 11 minutes without scoring a field goal.

Still, Delaware State chipped the lead to one with 25 seconds left before Hawks guard Nicole Council was fouled driving to the basket. She converted her two free throws to put the team up 58-55 with 21 seconds remaining.

Council intercepted a Hornets pass on the next possession to seal the win for the Hawks.

Morgan State and UMES split their regular-season meetings.

"We're going to come out hard and play tough defense," Patterson said. "A lot is going to have to do with the defensive effort. We'll be prepared for that team."
