THREE NORTH Carroll Middle School pupils were chosen from hundreds of county student string instrumentalists to join the All-County Orchestra.

Suzanne Jugo and Amy Grossnickle play bass. Brian Porter plays viola. Auditions required each candidate to play a chosen selection.

This year, Bach's complex Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 was the audition piece.

A rigorous schedule of rehearsals brings the musicians from every corner of the county together for several days of intensive preparation for a single concert.

The public is invited to the concert at 7: 30 p.m. March 18 at North Carroll High School.

Hampstead pool

A favorite place for families in summer is the Hampstead pool.

Under the management by Heather Semies, swim lessons and family events are being renewed for the summer. Semies and certified swim instructors will offer lessons. Details will be mailed with membership cards. Lessons usually begin in June.

The pool officially opens May 27 for weekends until Carroll County schools are out of session. Pool hours are noon to 7: 30 p.m. daily.

Improvements are planned. The fenced-in area will be extended, and trees will be planted to provide shade. New drains are planned for the pool and wading pool.

Registration is in progress for membership. Single memberships are offered for weekends at $50, or unlimited seven-day use for $90.

Family memberships are offered for weekends only at $100, or unlimited seven-day use for $180. A family includes up to seven immediate family members. Additional members may pay $45.

Sample Scouts

Girls interested in Girl Scouting can attend a Sampler Session. The sampler runs from eight to 10 weeks. The first meeting is at 7 p.m. tomorrow at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Main Street, Hampstead.

Volunteers are sought for the program. Guidance is provided by experienced Scouting adults, and an outline of the program is provided.

Volunteers can call Valerie Harford at Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, 410-358-9711.

Bulk trash day

Hampstead residents should include March 18 in their spring cleaning plans. Large items the regular trash pickup can't manage are picked up on Bulk Trash Pickup Day.

Items should be placed at the curb the evening of March 17 for pickup March 18.

Information: the Town Office, 410-239-7408.

Art at Cranberry

March is Youth Art Month, and to celebrate, student artwork from local schools is on exhibit at Cranberry Mall. The exhibit runs through Sunday in the mall strolling area between the fountains and food court.

Artwork by Hampstead Elementary School is on exhibit this month in the children's section at the North Carroll branch library.
