Westminster investigates fatal beating

Westminster police are investigating the death of a pizza deliveryman, who was severely beaten in a city alley more than a week before he died, a police spokesman said.

Chad Lee Weller, 36, was pronounced dead Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he had remained in critical condition since the attack Feb. 22, said Maj. Dean Brewer of the Westminster Police Department.

Weller, a part-time student at Western Maryland College, worked for Best Pizza in the first block of Pennsylvania Ave. He was found about 7: 25 p.m. in Wantz Alley, near the back of the pizza shop, and his pickup truck was found abandoned a short time later.

The truck has been towed to the state police crime lab in Pikesville, Brewer said.

"Robbery does not appear to be a motive, but we're not ruling it out," Brewer said. "We are interviewing all witnesses again and hoping that someone will come forward with information leading us to whoever is responsible for Mr. Weller's death," he said.

Anyone with information about the attack may call Westminster police at 410-848-4646 or 410-857-TIPS to remain anonymous.
