Mardi Gras soiree

MARYLAND SCENE

March 05, 2000|By SLOANE BROWN

The Belvedere Hotel's Grand Ballroom glistened in white and gold at the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore's Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball. But the rococo moldings weren't the only gilded features in the room. Center board member Tim Hurley gave off a shine with a silver face as part of his Mardi Gras get-up. Branch Morgan came in full African ceremonial regalia. But most of the 200 merrymakers came costumed in elegant tuxedos and evening gowns.

Adding to the marvelous mix: Michael Linnemann, center coordinator; Richard Oloizia, event chair; Everett Sillers, center board past president; Refik Agri, Carlton Smith and Lenny Stern, board members; Mary Konchar and Sal Piraro, center volunteers; Jay Yoke, University of Baltimore student; Donna Scherer, Baltimore massage therapist; Albert Shrieves, Amtrak bartender; David Smith, pastor of Metropolitan Community Church; Mo Murray, chief shop steward, Maryland Mile Racetracks Local No. 27; Chuck Blackledge, operations manager for Shofer's Furniture; Sherri Wright, distribution specialist for Boise Cascade Office Products; and Joe Diehl, picture framer with Framers Outlet.

The soiree raised $4,500 for Gay & Lesbian Community Center programs.
