Beginning next month, Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown will kick off a series of events in Baltimore to celebrate its 200th birthday.
Mayo A. Shattuck III, co-chairman of Alex. Brown, said the company will spend several million dollars sponsoring a wide range of events and charitable activities.
It is a huge program, said Shattuck, who is also co-head of global investment banking at Deutsche Bank AG, Alex. Browns parent company in Frankfurt, Germany.
In April, the company will cut a giant anniversary cake at the Inner Harbor and offer free admission to museums and other local attractions.
The company will underwrite beautification projects downtown and at the Inner Harbor, and sponsor Operation Sail 2000, in which about a dozen tall-masted schooners will dock in Baltimore from June 23 to 29.
The company also will also sponsor the annual Army-Navy football game, which will be played at PSINet Stadium Dec. 2.
The investment bank will hold special events in other cities where it has offices.
Formerly known as Alex. Brown Inc., the firm was founded in Baltimore in 1800 by Alexander Brown, an Irish immigrant. It was sold in September 1997 to Bankers Trust Corp. of New York. Deutsche Bank bought Bankers Trust in June 1999, becoming owner of Alex. Brown, which is known as a top investment bank.
Shattuck said the celebration is a way to launch a new name for this great legacy. It gives us a good opportunity not only to feel good about the past, but feel good about the future.
