U.S. Foodservice buys Stock Yards Packing Co. Inc.

U.S. Foodservice of Columbia has acquired Stock Yards Packing Co. Inc., a custom meat cutter predominantly serving the Chicago, Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J., markets.

The eighth company with custom meat-cutting operations acquired by U.S. Foodservice in the past five years, Stock Yards Packing generated sales of about $108 million in the last fiscal year.

U.S. Foodservice is closing its San Francisco full-service distribution center and reducing the number of employees throughout the company.

The company's sales growth for January was 13 percent over sales during the same period last year.

Sandy Spring National Bank places team in Columbia

Sandy Spring National Bank has located a commercial services team in the Columbia area to serve business clients.

Pamela Roberts, vice president, will manage the team. Linda Drecchio, vice president and business banking officer, and David Welker, business banking officer, also will join the team.

The group is in Suite 170, 10715 Charter Drive, and expects to move to a 55,000-square-foot facility in the Rivers Corporate Park on Guilford Road in the summer. The bank's operations group, mortgage corporation and consumer lending department will share the space.

Sandy Spring Bancorp, parent company of Sandy Spring National Bank, is based in Olney.

That's Amore, A. V. Imports plan `Winter Wine Dinner'

That's Amore of Columbia has paired with Columbia-based A. V. Imports to hold a "Winter Wine Dinner" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the restaurant, 10400 Little Patuxent Parkway.

The evening will feature a wine tasting and a five-course dinner, with a seasonal menu complementing each wine. Staff from A. V. Imports, a wine importer, will narrate.

That's Amore of Columbia is the fifth restaurant in the Rockville-based chain.

Manekin LLC donates over $50,000 to charities

Columbia-based Manekin LLC contributed more than $50,000 to local charities in 1999.

The real estate company has worked with its employees and subcontractors to support local nonprofit groups.

People

Richard Knapp has been hired as general manager for Metzler's Garden Center and will be responsible for the Columbia and Eldersburg stores. Formerly nursery manager at Waterloo Gardens in Exton, Pa., Knapp is a certified horticulturist with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Shirley Matlock has been elected 2000 president of the Maryland Chapter of the Council of Residential Specialists, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. Matlock, an associate with Re/MAX Advantage Realty in Columbia, works in Howard, Baltimore and Carroll counties.
