Hopkins advances to Centennial final

Wertman gets 1,000th point as Jays down Muhlenberg

Joel Wertman scored 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and grabbed 11 rebounds as Johns Hopkins defeated Muhlenberg, 64-60, last night in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference tournament in Allentown, Pa.

The Blue Jays (18-7) will play at Franklin & Marshall in Saturday's title game at a time to be determined. It is Hopkins' third straight appearance in the conference championship game.

Muhlenberg twice cut the Blue Jays' lead to two in the final 4: 38, but Hopkins clinched the win on two free throws by Ryan Satalin with 21 second left for a 62-58 lead.

Franklin & Marshall 87, Washington College 85: Jerome Maiatico's 16-foot jumper at the buzzer propelled the Diplomats (20-5) over the Shoremen (13-13) in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference tournament.

Washington's Steve DeVore scored with two seconds left to tie the game at 85.

The Shoremen led 70-60 before Franklin & Marshall used a 12-1 run for a 72-71 lead with 5: 54 left.

Goucher 68, Catholic 59: The Gophers (13-12) scored 13 of the last 19 points to break a tie at 49 and advance to the championship game of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament in Washington.

The Gophers will play at Marymount in Saturday's title game.

Josh Stolz had nine of his 11 points during Goucher's game-closing run.

Catholic (22-4), which is ranked No. 5 nationally in Division III, had tied the game at 49 on three straight three-pointers by Pat Maloney.

Tavar Witherspoon led Goucher with 12 points.

Marymount 88, Salisbury State 85, OT: Despite 27 points from Doug King, the visiting Sea Gulls fell in overtime in the semifinals of the CAC tournament.

Salisbury trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half, but King's basket with eight minutes left tied the game at 63. Regulation play ended tied at 74.

The Sea Gulls scored first in overtime but never led again.

Women

Loyola 57, Manhattan 45: Shontrese Smith scored 12 points and Shannon Cohen (Mercy) had 11 points, six assists and five steals as the Greyhounds defeated the Jaspers in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Reitz Arena.

With the win, the Greyhounds (11-15, 8-9) clinched at least the sixth seed in next weekend's postseason tournament in Albany, N.Y.

Loyola broke from a 33-32 lead early in the second half with a 15-2 run. Manhattan (15-11, 7-10) shot just 29.6 percent for the game, and its deficit never dipped below 12 points in the second half.

Johns Hopkins 64, Swarthmore 49: The host Blue Jays (20-5) used a 12-2 late in the second half run to advance to their fifth consecutive Centennial Conference tournament championship game.

Leslie Ritter's 19 points led Johns Hopkins, which turned a 45-43 lead into a 57-45 edge with 3: 58 left.

The Blue Jays will play host to Muhlenberg in Saturday's title game.

Lehigh 72, Navy 63: Maureen Trigo had 18 points as the host Mountain Hawks (13-14, 6-5) downed the Midshipmen (4-21, 2-9) in a Patriot League game.

Lehigh led 29-28 at halftime and pulled away by shooting 50 percent in the second half.

Navy's Hilary Goodrich led all scorers with 19.

Bowie State 82, UDC 40: Deidra Fields and Keisha Todd scored 12 points apiece to power the Bulldogs (20-4) over the visiting Firebirds (4-21).

Bowie State scored 41 points in each half and shot 56.7 percent in the second half.
