Pizza deliveryman beaten, suffers critical head injuries

February 24, 2000

Westminster police are investigating the beating of a pizza deliveryman Tuesday evening in an alley off Pennsylvania Avenue.

Chad Lee Weller, 36, of Westminster was in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a hospital spokeswoman said.

According to police, Weller was found at 7: 25 p.m. in Wantz Alley, behind the first block of Pennsylvania Ave., where he worked for Best Pizza. He was taken to Carroll County General Hospital with head injuries and was transferred to the Baltimore hospital.

Robbery apparently was not a motive, said Maj. Dean Brewer, noting the injured man had returned from a delivery and had stepped outside for a few minutes until his next delivery was ready.

"We have not been able to interview Mr. Weller, and witnesses heard squealing tires, but didn't see what happened," Brewer said.

The man's GMC Sonoma pickup truck was missing from the alley, but it was located soon after the incident at West Main and Union streets, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Westminster police at 410-848-4646, or call 410-857-TIPS to remain anonymous.
