If anything can save the beleaguered Peerce's Plantation in Phoenix, it's owner Peerce Lake's latest and smartest move. He's hired Michael Rork, one of the area's genuine celebrity chefs, as Peerce's consulting executive chef. "Mike can put us on the track we want to be going," says Lake.
Rork, who six years ago left Hampton's in the Harbor Court Hotel to open his own restaurant on the Eastern Shore, will be at Peerce's for the next six weeks pretty much full time. (He started yesterday.) After that he'll be going back and forth between Peerce's and Michael Rork's Town Dock in St. Michaels. "It's slow here [on the Eastern Shore] during the winter," Rork says. "So in the interim I'll be in Baltimore redoing the menu, hiring a chef and training him until my business picks up again in April."
The new menu will be a hybrid of Plantation favorites such as the rack of lamb and Rork's seafood dishes -- all with some new twists, he promises.
Carolyn's Cafe (213 Penn St.) in Ridgley's Delight might not sound like a Jamaican restaurant, but earlier this month it was taken over by Ras Doobie de Chef Catering. Owners Winston and Nzinga Ama Linton are serving up specialties like jerk chicken, curried goat, peas and rice, oxtail, curried shrimp, homemade ginger beer and fruit lemonade, and Guinness Stout ice cream. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays ("But we'll stay open later if someone is still eating dinner," says Mrs. Linton) and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday brunch is served 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. No credit cards are accepted yet.
Ruth's Chris No. 4
It's a go. Beef honcho Steve de Castro has finalized the deal to open his fourth Ruth's Chris Steak House, in Pikesville, on April 3. (His others are located downtown, in Annapolis and in Raleigh, N.C.). The new Ruth's Chris will occupy the spot where Jasper's was.
