Young scientists at Hammond Middle show us what they can do

REPORT CARDS have been issued a little later than usual at area schools because of inclement weather. They bring with them the usual anxiety generated by our children's performance reviews -- and an opportunity to notice some of the wonderful things our students have been doing.

Here's a sampling.

At Hammond Middle School, children have been busy with the school's science fair -- Science Expo 2000.

Sophia Berruz won the competition with her project, "Let's Make Paper."

Yao Lu won second place with "Which Fabric Is the Best Insulator," and Paige Lewis and Lauren Greer won third prize for "The Flame Game."

Schoolchildren who will enter their projects in the Howard County Mathematics, Science and Technology Fair next monthinclude those four and Vincent Barracchini, Paul Azzolini, Kristin Oleszewski, Diana Miller, Grant Hamming, Devin Rhoad and Derek Wood.

At Murray Hill Middle School, the PTA's Staff Appreciation Day in December recognized teachers' efforts to ensure academic achievement during the difficult years of early adolescence.

Parents Rhea Simpson-Weber, Cheryl DeShields, Scott and Kathy Brannan, Rosemarie Celentano, Brenda Hoe, Sue Ann Eastman, Barbara Coe, Pat Flynn, Susan Miranda, Karen Waters, Helen Giove, Jennifer Landy, Mary Kirk, Bridgett Humphreys, Michele Hunter, Marilyn Johnson, Cindy Rogers and Judy Faudale prepared baked goods for the event.

Congratulations to Murray Hill Middle School cheerleaders Ashley Celentano, Lauren Giove and Roxanne Nickell, who competed in the Pop Warner National Cheerleading Championship in December in Orlando, Fla.

Young artists at Fulton Elementary School have created mixed-media collages on the theme "Play I Enjoy During Winter." (The weather provided plenty of inspiration!)

Among the artists whose work is decorating school hallways are Jacob Hurley, Rachel Millstein, Camille Higgs, Celene Monroe, Eunice Kim, Ben Yu, Taegan Boales, Michelle Haltmeyer, Cory McLaughlin, Larissa Knoblett, Vinny Gallis, William Jennings and Amanda Boswell.

Bollman Bridge Elementary is putting on an "Awesome Art Day" -- in which the children become artists for a day -- on March 9.

The event requires help from volunteers and impressive quantities of art materials.

The school's art department is seeking willing hands and materials.

Those with a love of art or making a mess and children are invited to spend the day helping.

Those who love all of the above but are short on time can still contribute. The program needs lots of plastic containers with lids -- such as yogurt cups and margarine tubs, cardboard toilet paper rolls, Styrofoam trays, yarn, ribbons, lace, buttons, brown paper bags and clothes hangers.

Get an early start on spring cleaning -- spring is just five weeks away -- and help the children recycle those items into artistic treasures.

Budding medicos

There are budding medicos among us.

Hammond High School offers an Independent Research and Intern Mentoring program, in which students explore a career field by working with someone in their chosen future field. And eight students are researching careers in medical and related biological sciences this year.

Emily Grason is studying equine veterinary medicine.

Keith Moraff is observing surgeries at St. Agnes Hospital.

Sonia Nahvi is studying gene therapy at the National Institutes of Health.

Alexis Oetting is studying animal behavior.

Brian Packer is also observing surgeries at St. Agnes -- with a focus on anesthesiology.

Missy Peltzman is observing autopsies and pathology procedures at University of Maryland Hospital.

Nicole Sealfon is shadowing doctors in a medical rotation program.

Lauren Snyder is investigating how the Howard County school system uses occupational therapists at Cedar Lane School.

These upperclassmen are getting an innovative education, along with their more traditional studies. Future patients and injured pets will be in good hands.
