Number of state highway fatalities dropped in 1999

ANNAPOLIS -- Fatalities on Maryland's highways dipped slightly last year while the number of fatal accidents rose, state officials said Tuesday. In 1999, 556 fatal accidents led to 598 deaths, the lowest number of fatalities since the state began keeping records on crashes 30 years ago.

The number of child highway fatalities dropped to six in 1999 from 17 in 1998.

Man whom police suspect in rape commits suicide

GREENSBORO -- A man who state police believed raped a 13-year-old girl committed suicide Sunday.

Police said they believe Jeffrey Bishop, 36, of Goldsboro, raped the girl Saturday at the home of his friends.
