Severna Park man dies after car hits him as he's lying in street

February 14, 2000

A 21-year-old Severna Park man was killed Friday night after he was struck by a car while lying in the center of South Seton Avenue in Emmitsburg, Frederick County.

Eric P. Lenfest, a senior at Mount St. Mary's College, was walking home from a local bar -- from which he had been removed by management -- about 9 p.m., according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Minutes later, for unknown reasons, Lenfest lay down in the street. He was struck by a 1999 Mercury Sable station wagon driven by Joseph E. May, 73, of Thurmont, the sheriff's office said. Lenfest was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed against May. The sheriff's office is investigating.
