Top volunteer firefighters honored at annual banquet

The Sykesville-Freedom District Volunteer Fire Department recently honored its members during the company's annual banquet.

The top 10 fire responders for last year were: Ed Ruch Jr., Corey Newton, Ed Ruch Sr., Gene Whiteman, D. Wayne Garver, Bobby Chesney, David Barnes, Brian Ruch, David Hoff and Brian Eagle.

The top 10 emergency medical services responders were: Kenneth B. Fischer, David Barnes, Elizabeth Luebberman, William Evans III, Kimberly Volkert, Julie Wilhide, Brian Eagle, Ed Ruch Jr., Jeff Fleming and Corey Newton.

The top administrative officers were: Lawrence Doyle, Gene Whiteman, William Baker, Robert Althoff Jr., Glenn Whiteman, Dennis Beard, Robert Volkert, Edgar Holman, Sue Tarrant. The top 10 auxiliary members, in hours of volunteer service, were: Evelyn Fleming, Nancy Bowman, Sue Tarrant, Jeff Tarrant, Nancy Clark, Emily Celly, Frances Rosier, Connie Strohecker, Frankie Wilcox, Debbie Stockdale.

During a memorial service at the banquet, deceased members Mercedes "June" Volkert and Effie E. "Lizzie" Rosier from the auxiliary and Woodrow "Woody" Golliday from the fire department were honored.


Gamber: Firefighters from Gamber, Reese and Westminster responded at 7: 46 p.m. Monday to a chimney fire in the 2700 block of Debbie Court. Units were out 50 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters assisted Baltimore County, responding at 1: 37 p.m. Monday to a fire alarm in the 4500 block of Robison Drive. Units were out 8 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters assisted Baltimore County, responding at 8: 36 a.m. Monday to an auto fire at Wards Chapel and Liberty roads. Units were out 8 minutes.
