Meeting will highlight vegetable, fruit production

The Maryland Cooperative Extension will hold the 2000 Southern Maryland Vegetable and Fruit Production meeting from 7: 30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Davidson Ruritan Club.

Speakers will present a broad range of topics including an update on pest control, overlooked opportunities in "trendy veggies," resources for getting started in organic vegetables, nutrient management, tips for growing strawberries and blueberries, and "Secrets and Tricks of Roadside Stand and Market Presentation."

Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification credits are awarded for attending the meeting. There is a $15 registration fee.

Research center is topic of Navy League discussion

Marie C. Halka of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. will discuss the closure of the David Taylor Research Center as a Navy facility and its redevelopment as a privatized high technology campus as guest speaker at a Feb. 9 dinner meeting of the Annapolis Council of the Navy League of the United States.

The event will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m. at the Naval Academy's Officers' and Faculty Club. It is open to the public.

Reservations are required and may be made by sending a check for $17 to Navy League, Annapolis Council, P.O. Box 6051, Annapolis, 21401-0051.

The league is a 70,000-member patriotic association dedicated to educating the public about the need for strong sea power and is open to all patriotic Americans not on active military duty.

Patricia A. Miller, president of the National Institute for Conflict Resolution, has been appointed to the board of directors for Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation. She is the founder and director of Anne Arundel County's Court Appointed Special Advocates, a volunteer program for citizens who wish to serve as court-appointed representatives to protect abused children in the court system.

Joseph Bracone, regional vice president of Citizens National Bank, has been elected president of the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. Bracone previously served as chairman of the West Anne Arundel County Chamber Foundation and of the chamber's Finance Committee.

Doug Edmonds has been named director of sales at the Annapolis Radisson Hotel. He was formerly director of sales with the Annapolis Days Inn.
