State House secretary dies when hit by van

January 29, 2000|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 65-year-old House of Delegates secretary was struck by a van and killed yesterday morning as she was walking across Benfield Boulevard near her Severna Park home.

Several witnesses told Anne Arundel County police that the victim, Elizabeth Catherine Sherwood, did not stop -- apparently not seeing the eastbound Ford Aerostar van -- before stepping out onto Benfield at Kensington Road.

The driver, Kellie Ann Demaio, 35, of Millersville, said she did not see the pedestrian because of glare from the sun on her windshield.

Sherwood suffered severe head injuries in the accident about 7: 45 a.m. and was pronounced dead less than an hour later at North Arundel Hospital. Police said the accident remains under investigation, but that the cause appeared to be pedestrian error.

The victim lived on Kensington Avenue East with her husband, Jack Sherwood, and was the mother of three sons. She had worked in the House of Delegates in Annapolis for nearly a decade -- the last six years as a secretary for Del. Jacob J. Mohorovic Jr., a Dundalk Democrat.

"When I first arrived in Annapolis, Betty showed me the ropes; she really knew the legislative process," Mohorovic said yesterday afternoon. "She pushed projects through in my office. She was a good friend and confidant."
