Ex-student, 19, sues Howard school board

January 27, 2000|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A former Atholton High School student who says she was severely beaten by another student is suing the Howard County Board of Education because, she alleges, officials did not do enough to protect her.

Melanie Walsh, 19, of Laurel claims in the suit that in April 1998 she was "attacked" after leaving a school restroom by a fellow student, who had been suspended twice before for threatening Walsh. The other student punched Walsh in the face and threw her head into the door, the suit says.

The suit claims that the school system knew of the danger and did nothing to protect Walsh. Walsh also is suing the other student.

The suit was filed in Howard County District Court in November but moved to Circuit Court this month. The suit says that Walsh still suffers pain and has extensive medical bills.

Walsh lives in Laurel but paid out-of-county tuition to attend Atholton. She graduated in 1998.
