Passeggiata wins Key Stakes

Burning Daylight Farms' Passeggiata was a repeat winner of the $75,000 Francis Scott Key Stakes for older fillies and mares yesterday at Laurel Park.

The 7-year-old daughter of Samoan, Passeggiata caught the post-time favorite Flippy Diane just before the wire and finished the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1 minute, 4 seconds. Passeggiata paid $4.80 to win and headed a 1-2 exacta of $8.80. Paula's Girl finished third.

"We were a lot closer than I expected and I know the speed was really running in front of me," said winning jockey Mario Pino. "I was in good position going into the turn, and after angling out at the top of the stretch, we wore the other mare down. This was a gutsy performance."

Passeggiata, trained by A. Ferris Allen, has won 13 of 36 starts and earned more than $180,00.
