Fairfield downs Loyola, 79-60

Darren Phillip scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds last night to lead Fairfield to a 79-60 victory over Loyola in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game in Fairfield, Conn.

Fairfield (6-8, 4-2) led 39-35 at the half and pulled away after intermission behind scoring runs of 9-0 and 13-0.

Loyola (5-10, 2-5) had three double-digit scorers, topped by Blanchard Hurd, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Women

Mount St. Mary's 63, UMBC 60: Kia Williams scored 15 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career, as the host Mountaineers (8-3, 5-0) handed the Retrievers (3-12, 0-5) their eighth straight loss.

Jami Lange's game-high 16 points led UMBC.

Franklin & Marshall 73, College of Notre Dame 48: Amy Kreitz had 15 points and Judy Stauber added 14 as the Diplomats overwhelmed the host Gators.

Amanda Poppleton led Notre Dame with 19 points but committed 16 of the Gators' 40 turnovers.
