Eastern Tech, boys basketball

The junior point guard scored 25 points, had six assists, three steals and two rebounds Wednesday as Eastern Tech beat perennial power Woodlawn, 85-61, for the first time in the Mavericks' 30-year history. On Friday, the Mavericks (7-4) upset previously unbeaten and then-No. 19 Perry Hall, 78-53, the first time Eastern Tech had ever defeated a ranked team. Benson had 27 points, three assists, two rebounds and one blocked shot. He averages 14.3 points and 4.9 assists, both team highs.

The Hampton University-bound senior was outstanding in two meets. At the Howard County group meet on Tuesday, she won three individual events: the 55 hurdles (8.7 seconds), 55 meters (7.3) and high jump (5 feet 2 inches). She also was the anchor on the winning 800 relay team. She then finished as the only double individual winner in the National Guard Meet at the 5th Regiment Armory on Saturday. She took gold in the 55 hurdles (8.6) and high jump, with the latter effort of 5-5 a Howard County record.
