National reading program features local competition

Elementary schools across the city will take part in the National Education Association's annual Read Across America effort, featuring a local reading contest in which the winning class will receive $1,000 to buy books through a donation from Saturn/UAW.

Kindergarten through fifth-grade classes participating in the competition will log the number of books they read before Feb. 18. The winner will be announced on Read Across America Day, March 2 -- Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Main sponsors of the local contest are the city school system, the Baltimore Urban League and the Maryland State Teachers Association.
