A police officer shot and killed a man in West Baltimore late last night after the man reportedly pointed a gun at the officer while running from what police believed was a drug deal, according to department officials at the scene.

Police said the incident began about 10: 30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Harlem Ave. when two uniformed officers on patrol saw a man approach a parked Nissan Pathfinder. Suspecting an impending drug deal, the officers walked to the pedestrian and began questioning him; the Pathfinder sped away.

The officers followed the Pathfinder by car to the 800 block of W. Lexington St., where two men jumped out of the Nissan and ran. As police caught one of the men, a second ran down a nearby alley. Police said the man turned toward one of the officers and pointed a gun at him.

After ordering the man to drop the weapon, the officer fired, police said, but the wounded man continued to run before collapsing in the 800 block of W. Vine St. The man was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they recovered a 9mm handgun from the scene.
