George A. Athanson,72, a former Hartford, Conn., mayor who frequently dressed up in costumes to promote the city, died Saturday in Hartford. The Democrat served as mayor from 1971 to 1981, one of the longest tenures in Hartford history.

Roger Barr,78, a sculptor whose work is in collections of institutions ranging from the Smithsonian to the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, died in Santa Rosa, Calif., on Friday from diabetic complications.

Marguerite Churchill,90, an actress who was John Wayne's leading lady in his first major film, "The Big Trail," died Sunday at a Broken Arrow, Okla., nursing home.
