County government offices to close for King holiday

County government offices, courts and libraries will be closed in observance of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

The landfill will be open, and Monday recycling and trash schedules will be in effect. Parking meters will be enforced.

United Seniors of Md. to hold legislative rally

United Seniors of Maryland will hold a legislative rally -- "Aging in Place: Your Place or Mine?" -- from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19 in Francis Scott Key Auditorium at St. John's College in Annapolis.

Nursing-home quality and services for senior citizens will be discussed.

The cost, including continental breakfast and lunch, is $10. Parking is available for $3 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A shuttle service to the rally will be provided.

The snow date, if Anne Arundel County schools are closed, is Jan. 26.

Two appointed to board of Domestic Violence Center

Elliott Finkelstein, a public relations and advertising copywriter, and Alexandra Landow, a corporate vice president, have joined the board of directors of the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County.

Last year, the center -- which provides services to victims, their children and abusive partners -- served more than 800 clients and received 5,100 calls to its hot line.

Clients' fees for shelter, counseling and legal services are adjusted to a sliding scale.
