Chamber of Commerce to offer lecture series

The Howard County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Brown Bag Lunch series from noon to 1 p.m. Thursdays at the chamber office, 5560 Sterrett Place, Columbia.

Jack Degele of the Small Business Alliance will speak about "Beyond Networking" on Thursday. Degele is president of the alliance -- a commercial referral service for small businesses based in Ellicott City.

Lew Wyscarver of the Private Security Partnership, a local security consulting firm, will speak about preventing commercial crime -- background checks, forgery, bad checks, credit card fraud and everyday business risks -- Jan. 20.

The cost for lunch is $5 for members; $10 for nonmembers.

Davis Instruments acquired by JPB Enterprises Inc.

JPB Enterprises Inc., a Columbia-based private investment holding company, has acquired Davis Instruments, a Baltimore manufacturer, distributor and calibrator of test, measurement control and calibration instruments.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Real estate trust acquires office building in Columbia

Wellsford Commercial Properties Trust has acquired Oakland Ridge, a 143,000-square-foot, one-story office building in Columbia.

The trust, a privately held real estate investment trust with a portfolio of 40 properties in the northern New Jersey, Boston and Baltimore-Washington markets, plans to invest in a new exterior and expanded parking lot. The company acquires under-used assets in good locations and redevelops them.
