Jones scores 45 in romp by Southwestern

Senior forward Michael Jones had 45 points, 20 rebounds and seven steals as No. 4 Southwestern romped over host Forest Park, 102-42, yesterday.

Jones was 19 of 25 from the field and made six of eight free throws. He had 20 points in the first half to help the Sabers (7-1) to a 38-21 lead at intermission. Jones did not play in the fourth quarter.

Jones, a quarterback for the Sabers last fall, was averaging 21 points and 13 rebounds coming into yesterday's game.

"Michael gets better each game as he adjusts from football to basketball," said coach Terry Leverett.

Senior center Jerome McNeil added eight points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks for Southwestern.

No. 19 Westminster 66, Liberty 52: Six-foot-7 forward Nick Hohenwarter scored 25 points and Jon-David Byers scored 18 and had five steals to lead the visiting Owls (7-1) over the Lions.

"I was definitely fired up for this game," said Hohenwarter, who also recorded 10 rebounds and three blocks. "I was ready to play him."
