1998 Murphy-Goode Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay, Sonoma County ($15).

This lively, fresh, crisp wine practices all the virtues of fine California chardonnay. There's lively acidity without artificiality, and the use of oak adds a toasty element without overwhelming the fruit. This wine's lively mix of flavors include apples, tropical fruit, nuts and melons -- but none of them too obvious. Murphy-Goode has been on a roll in recent years, and this fine white wine keeps up the momentum. Drink it within a year.
