Urban Retail wins contract to manage, lease Laurel Mall

Urban Shopping Centers Inc. has announced that its management company affiliate, Urban Retail Properties Co., has assumed management, leasing and marketing responsibilities for Laurel Mall. The contract was awarded by Cheslock Bakker & Associates and Apollo Real Estate Investment Fund II, LP, co-owners of the property.

Laurel Mall is a two-level, 660,301-square-foot enclosed regional mall on U.S. 1 in Laurel. The mall opened in 1979 and underwent a major renovation that was completed in 1998.

Business Exchange luncheon to feature Deborah McCarty

The Columbia Business Exchange will present its "State of Columbia" luncheon, with a talk by Columbia Association President Deborah McCarty, at 11: 30 a.m. Jan. 13 at the Columbia Hilton, 5485 Twin Knolls Road.

She will discuss challenges faced by the growing community, and the impact of current decisions on business in the county.

Admission, including lunch, is $25 for members and $30 for others. A cash bar will be open.

Economic Development to present sixth EBO Awards

The Howard County Economic Development Authority's Equal Business Opportunity Committee will sponsor its sixth EBO Awards Program on Feb. 24 at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's Kossiakoff Center in Laurel.

The program recognizes outstanding leadership by members of the county's business community. Awards are given in four categories: Outstanding Business Achievement; Outstanding Individual Achievement; Outstanding Company Commitment; and Outstanding Individual Commitment.

The committee's mission is to foster a strong economic environment in the county. Businesses supported by EBO include small and under-used businesses, particularly businesses owned by minorities, women, and people with disabilities.

Scholarship offered to senior interested in legal career

The law firm of Rapaport & Skalny LLC will offer a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who intends to pursue a career in law.

The Columbia-based firm specializes in business law, estate planning and community association law.


Dr. Samir F. Shureih, a resident of Columbia, has been elected chief of the medical staff at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He also serves as director of the new Cosmetic Surgery Center based at the hospital. He is an instructor of plastic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
