Library earns high marks in national rankings

TOWSON -- Baltimore County Public Library has been ranked fourth nationally among library systems serving 500,000 people or more, according to a recent national rating. Also, the county system was rated 10th among all 9,000 public libraries in the country.

The ranking, by Hennen's American Public Library Rating Index, was based on factors such as circulation, staffing, materials, reference service and funding. The county library system circulates more than 11 million items each year and has 16 locations.

Professionals to offer tips on creating children's books

COLUMBIA -- Prospective children's book authors can get tips and insights from published authors at "Once Upon a Time: The Genesis of a Children's Picture Book," a program being offered at the east Columbia branch library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, from 3: 30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 15.

Jerdine Nolen, author of "Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm" and "Raising Dragons" and Sally Wern Comport, illustrator for "Brave Margaret," will offer advice on developing picture books.
