December 20, 1999|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A man was fatally shot during an attempted robbery yesterday near Patterson Park in Southeast Baltimore. He was the city's 299th homicide victim this year, police said.

Arthur E. Armel, 38, was walking near his home in the 100 block of N. Potomac St. about 1 a.m. when he was shot several times with a handgun, said Sgt. Scott Rowe, a police spokesman. Armel was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died, Rowe said.

Baltimore has had 300 homicides or more every year since 1990.
